Spent Mushroom Compost

General Description

Spent mushroom compost, also known as mushroom substrate, is a byproduct of the commercial mushroom growing industry. It is the material left over after the mushrooms have been harvested from the growing beds.

Spent mushroom compost is typically a mixture of various organic materials such as straw, hay, corn cobs, and poultry manure that have been used as a substrate for mushroom cultivation. During the growing process, the substrate is colonized by mushroom mycelium, which breaks down and transforms the organic matter into a nutrient-rich compost.

This compost can be used as a soil amendment for gardening or farming. It is often high in organic matter and nutrients, which can improve soil fertility and structure. Spent mushroom compost may also have some residual fungicidal properties, which can be beneficial for controlling certain soil-borne diseases.
