Young gardeners club project – counting aphids

The young gardener aphid project!

We need your help!

This year the GardenAdvice garden advisors have been inundated with requests for help from people having troubles with aphids such as green fly and black fly. We think that even though this year has had its wet periods there has been a massive increase in aphids. You can help us find out if the aphids have increased by tell us what the aphid population is in your garden or your friends garden. For every young gardener member that helps us with this project we have arrange for them to receive a free mini gardening tool kit.

To help us with our aphid counting program you will need to have a pencil and a note pad.

Go into your garden, your friend’s garden or a park and select up to 20 plants. On your pad draw three columns with labels at the top of each column for black fly, green fly, and white fly.

Then next looking at each plant carefully under the leaves and on flower buds try to count the numbers of aphids you find. Write the numbers down on your pad in the correct column. For example if you find 5 green fly then write five in the green fly column on your note pad. After you have done as many plants as possible or a maximum of 20 write your results down and send then to us at aphids@gardenadvice.co.uk . Remember to include a number of the plants that you could not find aphids any aphids on as well as the ones you did. At the bottom of your email remember to include your address so we can send you a free mini gardening tool kit.
