How do I sow sweet pea seeds which have hard seed coats

Sweet pea seeds have hard coats that can make them difficult to germinate. To help the seeds sprout, you can try the following methods:

Scarification: This involves lightly scratching the surface of the seed coat to allow water to penetrate. You can do this by gently rubbing the seeds on sandpaper or using a small knife to make shallow cuts in the seed coat.

Soak: Soak the seeds in water for at least 24 hours before planting. This will help to soften the seed coat and allow the seed to absorb water.

Start them indoors: Sweet peas will germinate best when the soil temperature is between 60 and 65 degrees Fahrenheit. It may be too cold for them to germinate outside, and starting them indoors can be a good idea.

Or Place seed in moist paper towel: Cover the seed with moist paper towel and place in a plastic bag. Put it in a warm place, and check after 2-3 days.

Once you have prepared the seeds, you can sow them in a seed tray or pots filled with seed compost, and keep the compost moist but not waterlogged. You can move the seedlings to their final growing location when they are large enough.
