GardenAdvice notes
Anemone × hybrida ‘Honorine Jobert’ is a graceful herbaceous perennial belonging to the Ranunculaceae family. Originating from Japan, this plant is celebrated for its elegant, pure white flowers that feature a golden-yellow center. The blooms are borne on slender stems that rise above attractive, deeply divided dark green leaves. Flowering from August to October, it brings a touch of brightness to the garden when many other plants are fading. This variety has earned the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit, signifying its excellent performance in gardens.
Ideal soil type
This anemone thrives in moist, fertile, and well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. It prefers neutral to slightly alkaline soils but is adaptable to a range of soil types, provided they are not waterlogged. Adding compost or well-rotted manure can enhance soil fertility and drainage.
Location and aspect
Anemone × hybrida ‘Honorine Jobert’ flourishes in partial shade but can tolerate full sun if the soil remains consistently moist. It is ideal for borders, woodland gardens, and cottage garden settings. Plant in a sheltered location to protect it from cold, drying winds, which can damage the delicate flowers and foliage.
Pest and disease problems
This plant is generally resistant to pests but can occasionally be affected by:
- Powdery mildew and leaf spot: Ensure good air circulation and avoid overhead watering to prevent these fungal diseases. If they occur, remove affected leaves and consider using a fungicide suitable for ornamental plants.
- Slugs and snails: Young shoots may be susceptible. Use slug deterrents or traps, and remove any hiding places to reduce their presence.
Regular monitoring and maintaining plant health through proper care can minimize these issues.
How to propagate
Propagation is best carried out by division or root cuttings:
- Division: In early spring or autumn, carefully lift the plant and separate the clumps, ensuring each section has roots and shoots. Replant immediately into prepared soil.
- Root cuttings: During winter, take 5-7 cm sections of root, place them horizontally in a pot with moist compost, and cover lightly with soil. Keep them in a cold frame or sheltered spot until shoots appear, then transplant.
- Best time for propagation: Early spring or autumn ensures the plant is not in active growth, reducing stress during the process.
