Autumn lawn care
How to care for your lawn after the hot summer
The very hot summer caused the grass plants to die back, especially the roots. To help the grass recover spike with a garden fork pushing the fork into the lawn by at least 50mm 4 to 6 times per square metre.
Although this is hard work it enables the grass to produce deeper rooting into the soil creating a better soil structure and improving the grass’s ability to maintain its colour in hot periods of weather.
In addition, light scarification with a spring rake, and cutting with a mower will help to maintain the grass by removing weed grasses such as Yorkshire fog.
Finally overseed with some grass seed or micro clover if you wish to create a clover lawn autumn is the best time to do this as the weather is cooler but the soil is still warm enough to germinate the seed. If we get a dry period of more than a few days light watering is advisable after overseeding every few days for 14 days, if the weather is set or damp then no watering will be needed.
