How to control Lesser Celandine
Lesser Celandine is becoming a problem in quite a problem in lots of gardens. Although short-lived in the spring before it dies back it does add some colour in the spring with its yellow flowers
To control lesser celandine in your garden, you can try the following methods:
- Pulling by hand: This is the most effective method for small infestations, as it removes the entire plant including its roots.
- Smothering with mulch: Cover the plant with a thick layer of organic mulch to prevent sunlight from reaching it, which will kill the plant over time. In addition to the mulch, the GardenAdvice team have been experimenting with laying packing cardboard them covering it with mulch.
- Herbicides: Use a selective herbicide specifically labelled for use on Lesser Celandine such as Round Up weed killer
- Avoid spreading: Make sure not to spread the plant by removing all of the flowers and seed heads before they have a chance to set the seed.
- Encouraging competition: Promote the growth of other plants to outcompete the lesser celandine such as vinca.
Remember to always follow the instructions on herbicides and to take necessary precautions when handling them.
