Coldframes and Cloches

How to use Coldframes and Cloches

Coldframes and cloches are useful tools for extending the growing season and protecting plants from the elements. Here’s a brief overview of how to use them:

  1. Coldframes:
  • Choose a location for your coldframe that gets plenty of sunlight and is sheltered from strong winds.
  • Build a frame out of wood or other materials, and cover it with clear plastic or glass. The cover should be angled to let in plenty of light and heat.
  • Fill the bottom of the frame with soil, and plant seeds or seedlings directly in the soil.
  • Water the plants as needed, and keep the cover closed to trap in heat and protect the plants from cold temperatures.
  1. Cloches:
  • Choose a location for your cloche that gets plenty of sunlight and is sheltered from strong winds.
  • Use a plastic or glass cloche to cover individual plants or rows of plants in your garden.
  • Make sure the cloche is secure and won’t blow away in the wind.
  • Water the plants as needed, and vent the cloche during warm days to prevent the plants from overheating.
  • Remove the cloche once the weather warms up, or use it to protect the plants from frost during the colder months.

Remember to monitor the temperature and moisture levels inside your coldframe or cloche, and adjust ventilation as needed to ensure healthy plant growth.
