Erigeron ‘Sea Breeze’ is a tough seaside daisy smothered all summer in masses of lilac-pink, yellow-centred daisy flowers over low, spreading foliage. Sun-loving and salt-tolerant, it thrives in walls, paving, gravel and coastal gardens.
GardenAdvice notes
A low, spreading evergreen daisy from the sea cliffs of California, ‘Sea Breeze’ flowers tirelessly through summer, its fleshy grey-green foliage and salt tolerance making it superb for exposed, sunny and coastal positions. Tough and drought-tolerant once established, it thrives in poor, sharply drained soil.
Growing & planting
Plant in spring in full sun in well-drained soil — it prefers poor, gritty or sandy ground and copes well with coastal exposure and salt spray. Ideal in gravel, at the front of borders, in wall crevices and paving cracks. Space about 30cm apart.
Care & maintenance
Low-maintenance. Water while establishing, then it is very drought-tolerant. Deadhead or shear over spent flowers to keep it neat and prolong the display. Cut back tired growth in spring. Avoid rich feeding and wet soil, which shorten its life.
Propagation
- Division: Divide established clumps in spring, replanting into well-drained soil.
- Cuttings: Take basal cuttings in spring.
- Seed: Sow seed in spring; it often self-seeds gently in gravel and paving.
Pests & diseases
Generally trouble-free. The main risk is rot in wet, heavy soil; otherwise it is little troubled by pests or disease and thrives on neglect in the right spot.
Uses in the garden
Perfect for coastal and seaside gardens, gravel gardens, dry stone walls, paving cracks, sunny banks and the front of well-drained borders, where it flowers for months.
Wildlife value
The long succession of open daisy flowers is a magnet for bees, hoverflies, butterflies and other pollinating insects right through summer.
Toxicity & safety
Seaside daisy is generally regarded as non-toxic to people and pets.
GardenAdvice tip
‘Sea Breeze’ is one of the longest-flowering plants you can grow for a hot, dry or seaside spot — it barely stops from June to the first frosts, especially if you shear off the spent flowers now and then. It seeds itself gently into gravel and wall cracks, which is usually a bonus rather than a nuisance.
