GardenAdvice notes
A neat, reliable, semi-evergreen grass, autumn moor grass forms tidy clumps of fresh, bright yellow-green foliage and produces slim silvery-white flower spikes from late summer into autumn. Tough and adaptable, tolerating lime, chalk, dry soil and light shade, it is an excellent, well-behaved ‘workhorse’ grass for edging, groundcover and modern mass plantings.
Growing & planting
Plant in spring or autumn in well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade — it is very tolerant, coping with chalk, lime and dry conditions as well as ordinary borders. Space about 40cm apart. It is excellent planted in blocks or drifts for a contemporary, meadow-like effect.
Care & maintenance
Very low-maintenance. Being semi-evergreen, it needs only a comb-through or light trim in spring to remove tatty foliage, rather than hard cutting back. Water while establishing. Divide congested clumps in spring. An easy, undemanding grass.
Propagation
- Division: Lift and divide established clumps in spring, as growth begins.
Pests & diseases
Generally trouble-free and robust, tolerating a wide range of conditions with few pests or diseases.
Uses in the garden
Superb for edging, groundcover and modern mass plantings, in mixed and naturalistic borders, and in gravel, where its neat habit, bright foliage and long season make it a dependable, tidy choice.
Wildlife value
The flower spikes and seedheads offer some value to insects and birds, and the neat clumps add structure to plantings.
Toxicity & safety
Autumn moor grass is generally regarded as non-toxic to people and pets.
GardenAdvice tip
Autumn moor grass is one of the most useful, well-behaved grasses you can grow — neat, tough, semi-evergreen and happy on dry or chalky soil and in light shade, where fussier grasses struggle. It looks best planted in generous blocks or drifts for a contemporary, flowing effect, and needs only a light spring tidy rather than hard cutting back.
