GardenAdvice notes
A compact, easy-going deciduous shrub, Japanese spiraea is one of the most reliable and undemanding of all small shrubs, forming a neat mound smothered in flat heads of flowers through summer. Tough, hardy and adaptable, it is superb for the front of borders, low informal hedging, mass planting and containers, and its flowers are loved by bees and butterflies.
Growing & planting
Plant in autumn or spring in most soils in full sun to partial shade — it is very tolerant and easy, though flower and foliage colour are best in good light. Give it moist but well-drained soil for the best growth. Space about 60cm apart. Water well while establishing.
Care & maintenance
Low-maintenance. Prune in early spring, cutting the whole plant back fairly hard to a low framework — this keeps it compact, encourages the best flowering and, in coloured-foliage forms, the brightest new leaves. Deadheading spent flowers can encourage a second flush. It responds well to hard pruning. Feed and mulch in spring.
Propagation
- Cuttings: Take softwood cuttings in summer or hardwood cuttings in autumn.
- Division: Suckering clumps can be divided in autumn or spring.
Pests & diseases
Generally trouble-free, tough and healthy, with few pests or diseases. One of the easiest and most reliable of shrubs.
Uses in the garden
Superb at the front of mixed and shrub borders, as low informal hedging, in mass and group plantings, in wildlife gardens and in containers, where its neat habit and long summer flowering earn their place.
Wildlife value
The flat flowerheads are very attractive to bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects through summer.
Toxicity & safety
Japanese spiraea is generally regarded as non-toxic to people and pets.
GardenAdvice tip
‘Golden Princess’ gives you two features in one easy little shrub — glowing golden foliage (with fiery orange-red new growth) and rose-pink summer flowers that bees love. Cut it back hard in early spring for the brightest fresh foliage and the neatest, most compact shape, and give it good light to keep the gold colour strong.
