Tree or grease bands are a preventative measure used to control pests on fruit and other trees. They consist of a sticky substance, usually petroleum jelly, which is applied to the trunk of the tree in a band around the tree’s base. The grease creates a barrier that physically blocks pests, such as moths, from reaching the branches and laying their eggs. This helps to prevent damage to the tree’s foliage, fruit, and overall health. Grease bands should be applied in late summer or early autumn, before the pests emerge, and reapplied regularly, typically once a year.

Grease bands are used to control a variety of pests, including but not limited to:

  • Moths: such as the Gypsy Moth, Winter Moth, and the Light Brown Apple Moth.
  • Caterpillars: including the larvae of various species of moths and butterflies.
  • Sawflies: the larvae of various species of wasp-like insects that feed on the leaves of trees and shrubs.
