GardenAdvice Notes:
Acanthus mollis, native to the Mediterranean, has a rich history in art and architecture, prominently featured in Corinthian column capitals in classical architecture. This perennial is not only valued for its aesthetic appeal but also used in traditional remedies for its anti-inflammatory properties. It thrives in the understory of dry forests, illustrating its resilience and low maintenance nature.
Ideal Soil Type:
Prefers well-drained, fertile soil, with moderate tolerance for clay soils. Soil pH should ideally be neutral to slightly acidic.
Location and Aspect:
Best planted in partial shade to full sun. It tolerates a range of light conditions but flourishes with morning sun and afternoon shade, particularly in hotter climates to prevent scorching.
Pest and Disease Problems:
Generally robust, Acanthus mollis may occasionally suffer from snails and powdery mildew. Regular slug patrols and ensuring good air circulation can prevent these issues. Fungal infections can be controlled with fungicides if they become problematic.
Propagation:
Propagate by root cuttings, division, or seeds. Division and root cuttings are best done in early spring or autumn. For seeds, sow in fall or early spring in a cold frame. Germination can be slow, requiring patience. Seedlings should be potted on until robust enough for outdoor planting.
Autumn and Winter Interest:
While it lacks significant autumn foliage colour, the architectural seed heads, if left intact, provide visual interest in the garden during the colder months.
