GardenAdvice Notes:

Origin and Uses: Aconitum ‘Spark’s Variety’, also known as Monkshood, has a rich history in traditional medicine and as a poison. Originating from mountainous regions of the Northern Hemisphere, it’s often used in borders for its striking appearance and height.

Interesting Facts: The name ‘Aconitum’ comes from the ancient Greek word ‘akoniton’, which refers to the town of Aconae. In mythology, it was used to kill wolves, which is why it’s commonly called wolfsbane.

Safety Warning: When taken by mouth: Aconite is unsafe. All species of the plant and products containing it are dangerous. Aconite contains a strong, fast-acting poison that causes severe side effects such as nausea, vomiting, breathing problems, heart problems, and death.

Ideal Soil Type:

Prefers moist, well-drained soil with a good amount of organic matter. It thrives in neutral to slightly acidic pH.

Location and Aspect:

Best planted in a sheltered location receiving partial shade to protect from strong afternoon sun, which can scorch the foliage.

Pest and Disease Problems:

Aconitum is relatively disease-free but can be susceptible to powdery mildew in dry conditions. Snails and slugs may target the foliage. Regularly check plants and use organic slug pellets or barriers as preventative measures.

Propagation:

Propagate by division in early spring or by root cuttings in winter. For division, carefully split the rootball, ensuring each section has several growth buds. Root cuttings should be taken when the plant is dormant, placing them horizontally in trays of compost.
