Jasminum ‘Clotted Cream’ is a climbing jasmine bearing richly fragrant, creamy flowers through summer above fresh green foliage. Twining over trellis, arches and sunny walls, it fills the garden with scent on warm evenings.
GardenAdvice notes
A selected form of the common summer jasmine, ‘Clotted Cream’ offers larger, richly scented creamy flowers over a long summer season. A vigorous twining climber, it is grown above all for its powerful evening fragrance, and is perfect trained over an arch, trellis or sunny wall near a seating area where the scent can be enjoyed.
Growing & planting
Plant in fertile, moist but well-drained soil in full sun, ideally against a warm, sheltered wall or over an arch where the scent will be appreciated. Provide a support such as trellis, wires or a pergola for the twining stems. It flowers best with plenty of warmth and sun.
Care & maintenance
Water well while establishing and in dry spells. Prune after flowering, thinning out and shortening stems to keep it within bounds and maintain a good framework, as it can become congested and vigorous. Feed and mulch in spring. Tie in new growth to its support as needed.
Propagation
- Cuttings: Take semi-ripe cuttings in summer.
- Layering: Peg down stems to root, then detach.
Pests & diseases
Generally trouble-free. Aphids can cluster on soft new growth. Otherwise little troubled by pests or disease when given a warm, well-drained position.
Uses in the garden
Superb trained over arches, pergolas, trellis and sunny walls, especially near doorways, seating and windows where the summer evening fragrance can be enjoyed.
Wildlife value
The nectar-rich, fragrant flowers attract bees, moths and other pollinating insects, particularly in the evening.
Toxicity & safety
Common jasmine is generally regarded as non-toxic to people and pets.
GardenAdvice tip
Plant ‘Clotted Cream’ where you’ll be sitting on summer evenings — by a door, bench or open window — because its real magic is the scent, which is strongest at dusk. It twines readily but can get congested, so thin and tidy it after flowering each year to keep an open, well-flowered framework rather than a tangled mass.
