GardenAdvice notes
A low, mat-forming evergreen stonecrop grown for its bright lemon-yellow succulent foliage, which intensifies in cool weather to light up rockeries and containers. Exceptionally drought-tolerant and easy, it needs only sun and sharp drainage, forming a neat, weed-suppressing carpet.
Growing & planting
Plant in spring or autumn in very free-draining, gritty soil in full sun, where the bright foliage colours best. Ideal in rockeries, wall tops, gravel, green roofs, between paving and in shallow pans. Space about 25cm apart.
Care & maintenance
Virtually maintenance-free. Water only in extreme drought, avoid feeding, and keep it dry over winter. Trim back any straggly growth in spring. Its low, spreading mat suppresses weeds and needs little attention.
Propagation
- Cuttings: Take stem or leaf cuttings in summer — they root extremely easily.
- Division: Detach rooted pieces and replant almost any time in the growing season.
Pests & diseases
Generally trouble-free. Vine weevil grubs can attack roots in containers, and it rots in wet, poorly drained conditions. Sharp drainage prevents almost all problems.
Uses in the garden
Perfect for rockeries, dry stone walls, alpine troughs and pans, gravel gardens, green roofs, between paving and in shallow containers, where its yellow foliage brightens year-round.
Wildlife value
The summer flowers attract bees and other pollinating insects.
Toxicity & safety
This stonecrop is generally regarded as non-toxic to people and pets, though the sap may occasionally irritate sensitive skin.
GardenAdvice tip
‘Winter Lemon’ earns its keep in the colder months, when its foliage takes on its brightest lemon-gold tones just as the garden needs cheering up — so plant it where you’ll see it in winter. Give it the sharpest drainage you can and it will thrive on neglect for years.
